VISIT TO ENGLAND

WOMEN’S CRICKET TEAM POSSIBILITY MENTIONED A women’s cricket team from New Zealand may visit England about 1953. The captain of the visiting Englishwomen, Miss Molly Hide, said at a mayoral reception to the team yesterday morning that an Australian team was to be invited to tour England in 1951, and it was hoped that a New Zealand team would make the trip about two years later. The reception attracted a wide representation of city sports organisations to the mayoral chambers, and the welcome extended to the team was notable for its sincerity and warmth.

Following the official welcome by the Mayor. Sir Donald Cameron, Cr W. S. expressed pleasure at the visit of the Englishwomen. He said that two English teams and two Australian teams had visited New Zealand in the past four years, there being one women’s team from each country. The present team, he said, was doubly welcome to Dunedin as cricketers and ambassadors for England.

Associated in the welcome were Mrs W. Coard, president of the Otago Women’s Cricket Association, Mrs W B. Taverner, Mr D. A. Solomon, president of the Otago Cricket Association, and Mr C. Jt L. White, president of the Otago Council of Sport. The manager of the women’s team Miss N. Rheinberg, referred to the warmth of the reception given to it in New Zealand. The people had taken the players into their homes and had treated them wonderfully. She expressed appreciation of the feeling in New Zealand towards the Old Country, saying that the team felt that it had a home away from home here, and also spoke of the food parcels sent to the United Kingdom, which she said was a great work. Miss Hide referred to the tremendous keenness and enthusiasm of the Otago players. She expressed the hope that men would assist the women’s association.
