MR MENZIES ATTACHES GREAT IMPORTANCE TO EMPIRE CONFERENCE
Rec. 10.20 pjn. CANBERRA, Mar. 10. Applauding the proposed Empire Conference, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr R. G. Menzies, stated: "You cannot have a really powerful British Empire voice unless you have an Empire defence plan, closely concerted, in which each unit undertakes certain obligations, not only to itself but to the others. “ If a British nation takes up the attitude that it will make no commitments outside its own country and must be utterly free of any entanglements, it is impossible to make perfect defence arrangements. Because of Communist infiltrations we are living in a new form of war. “ The Prime Minister, Mr J. B. Chifley,” he said, “should represent Australia, instead of the Minister of External Affairs, Dr H. V. Evatt. Otherwise, it will be thought this conference is a sideline or of minor moment.
“ Once it used to be war by declaration, then war by sudden invasion without warning. Now it has become war by infiltration and undermining—but it is war, nevertheless.”
