REFERENCE TO MAORIS
TRANSLATION FROM MOSCOW PA WELLINGTON, Mar. 10. A translation of the article in the Russian newspaper Trud has been received by the Government from the New Zealand Minister to Moscow, Mr C W. Boswell. In this translation, reference to the Maoris differs from that, in the newspaper message cabled from London, although in other respects the two versions are much the same. The reference to Maoris in the translation forwarded by Mr Boswell reads: “As regard the native population of New Zealand itself —the Maoris—they have for 100 years been subject to organised extermination, and those who have remained alive have been driven on to poor land and are slaves of the British. The ruling circles of New Zealand do not conceal their desire to perpetuate the Maoris’ position as slaves by openly teaching their ‘ racial inferiority.' ”
