UNITED PARTY LEADS
SOUTH AFRICAN PROVINCIAL ELECTIONS JOHANNESBURG, Rec. 11.5 p.m. Mar. 10.
With half the votes counted in the South African provincial elections, General Smuts’s United Party was leading in three provinces, but so far, only results from urban constituencies have been announced. The decisive factor will have been the voting in rural constituencies, results of which are not expected to start coming in until this afternoon. Latest returns show the state of parties.—Transvaal: United Party 20 Nationalists 10, Labour 2, Independent 1. Cape Province: United Party 20, Nationalists 6, Labour 1. Natal: United Party 18, Independent 1. Orange Free State: Nationalists 5, United Party 1. Total seats in the Provincial Councils for each of the provinces are:— Transvaal 66, Cape Province 55, Natal 25, Orange Free State 25.
