BALDWIN RETURNING TO LEEWARD ISLANDS

Rec. 8 p.m. LONDON, Mar. 9. The Colonial Secretary, Mr A. Creech Jones, announced in the House of Commons to-day that Earl Baldwin u’ould shortly return to resume his duties as Governor of the Leeward Islands. Mr Creech Jones added: “Earl Baldwin has expressed his unqualified regret at the nature of statements attributed to him in the press after his arrival.”

Mr Creech Jones, discussing why Earl Baldwin was recalled, said ho had been disturbed by the absence of adequate reports from Earl Baldwin on the industrial situation on the islands and other aspects of his administration. These included a 10year development plan for the islands which had “ been await.ed for some time,” besides constitutional reform proposals. Mr Creech Jones added that the Acting Governor had forwarded the plan during Earl Baldwin’s absence.
