BAILEY BRIDGE ERECTED

MAKAREWA-LOCHIEL DEVIATION PA INVERCARGILL. Mar. 10. A Bailey bridge was placed across the Makarewa River at Wallacetown to-day by staff members of the Invercargill branch of the Ministry of Works. The bridge is 140 feet long and is suitable for class 12 loading. It has been erected to make use of a deviation between Makarewa and Lochiel on the new highway. The bridge is a temporary measure until the time when a permanent concrete bridge is constructed across the river. With only six men, the department erected the bridge in two days. As the bridge was surplus war stock, it had rusted considerably and it was necessary for the department to paint the structure. The Bailey bridge was part of the emergency equipment carried by the Main Highways Board.
