MEANS TEST
Sir,—l wish to voice my opinion and that of many hundreds of others who are disgusted at the very small allowable income of £1 plus a pension of £2 s s, as against the £8 per week given to all exM.P.’s, irrespective of what income they may have. Everyone is complaining today that labour is very difficult to get, and I am sure 1 : there are plenty of people on various benefits who would be able to take a full or part-time job, thus making a few extra shillings, besides being a great help to production, if the present means te'ist was lifted. If an ex-MJ*. warrants a pension of £8 weekly, surely an old person who has helped to make this New Zealand the wonderful country it is should be allowed £4 weekly, with an allowable income of £2. All benefits, are paid for by the people, and should therefore be classed as State superannuation. I am certain unless something is done, and done very soon, the electors will demand a big change on election day. I am confident that what is being done to-day is not what the late Mr Savage had in mind.—l am, etc., Disgusted.
