THE TWO COMMUNISMS

. Sir,—l think we should distinguish two ideas of Communism, frequently confused. One is a system of government existing in Russia at the present time; the other, a natural tendency of human beings living together in natural communities. The second has existed as long as any human herd. , The fact which prevents history being the record of communistic States is that Fascism is just as human and just as old. Sometimes one tendency wins,, sometimes the other. Jesus Christ, Whom even the most atheistic can regard as an important moral teacher, said both, " Thou shalt love they neighbour as thyself " —a good communistic principle—and “Render unto Caesar the things Which are Caesar’s,” Caesar being a militaristic diatator commanding an army with strong communistic and brotherly tendencies. These inconsistencies are continually glossed over in history and morals because they are glossed over in our nature. ’ Communism seems to me to lead to a dictator and a Fascism, but tends, to weaken the government it chooses; just as English democracy tends (or did before this present bureaucracy) to let everyone be king of his own castle.—-I am, etc., : A. M. G.
