ROYAL ACADEMY * PRESIDENT RESIGNING TO SPEND MORE TIME IN COUNTRY Rec. 8 p.m. LONDON, Mar. 8. Because he wants to spend his time in the country, do more painting and see the Two Thousand Guineas, Sir Alfred Munnings, 70-year-old president of the Royal Academy, will retire at the end of the year. He has been president since 1944. Sir Alfred, genial, vigorous, renowned painter of the English country scene, of horses and racing, has stated: “ I want to live in the country. I am absolutely tied with this job and I want to be free. I want to lead my own life.
“ There are so many council meetings of the Royal Academy, you are never free. It always happens that the private-view at the academy is during the Two Thousand Guineas week, and I find myself torn between the two. I want to see the race, blit I have to be in London all the week.
Sir Alfred, who is passionately fond of horses, has always owned them since he acquired his first by exchanging a picture for a publican’s nag.
