PARTY FOR CHILDREN
ON BOARD BELLONA VARIETY OF ENTERTAINMENT A children’s party will be held on board HMNZS Bellona to-morrow, when orphans from city homes, children under the care of Heritage, and small parties from various schools, will be the guests of the seamen. Aerial railways, bosun’s chairs, merry-go-rounds, lucky dips, lolly scrambles, haunted passages and rifle shooting will be included in the entertainment for the children. Efforts are being made to hire a cart horse, which will be dressed up with nautical emblems, and ridden by the “ fat boy ” of the ship. About 30 seamen will be dressed up as clowns to assist in the entertainment. The assembly point for the children will either be at the Octagon or Queen’s Gardens at 1.30 p.m. Inspection tours of the ship have been arranged for the RNZNVR (Otago Division) to-morrow evening and for a party of 100 from the Otago Boys’ High School on Thursday afternoon. The Sea Rangers visited the ship last night. A comprehensive list of sporting activities has been arranged by the Physical Welfare Branch, at the request of the Mayor, Sir Donald Cameron, for the complement of the Bellona. To-day a cricket match will be played against King’s High School at the school grounds, and archery and miniature rifle meetings, will be held in the Garrison Hall. An Association football match against the Mornington Club, a cricket match against the Air Force at the Taieri, and a softball match against the Bears Club at Ellis Park, have been arranged for to-morrow. Table Tennis will also be played to-morrow, probably in the RSA Hall. In addition, the Lawn Tennis Association has made its courts at Logan Park available to the seamen and it is hoped to arrange a Rugby football match against the Hillside Workshops and also water polo matches.
