FINE DAY BRINGS FORTH SUMMER WEAR AT RACES

After an hour or two of uncertainty in the earlier part of the day, Saturday provided perfect weather for the races at Wingatui. Feminine patrons arrived with coats much in evidence, and many came armed with umbrellas, but as the day wore on and temperatures soared, coats were discarded and it became evident that the majority of the fair sex had come prepared for fine weather. Hats of Bangkok and chip straw in white or cream were a popular choice, veils were not as much in evidence as at other recent meetings, and flowers were still seen on many models. Autumn millinery did not make its appearance to any great extent. Many of the younger patrons wore frocks or suits of print and linen, with white the favourite for accessories. One smartly-clad young woman favoured a nut brown suit of fine corded velvet. Her bonnet-shaped hat of sky blue chip straw was trimmed lightly with brown, and she wore a dainty blouse in matching blue —an attractive outfit. Many chose suits of light-weight wool in pale shades of summery appearance, yet warm in uncertain weather. An idea as yet seen on few occasions in Dunedin was the contrasting skirt and jacket. The skirt in most cases was either pleated all round or at least in front, and the jacket was usually of a patterned material which repeated the tone of the skirt. A particularly effective outfit of this type consisted of a navy skirt worn under a cream jacket of a fine Paisley design, and with a navy Bangkok straw hat. Among those noticed on the lawns were Lady Sidey, Dr E. M. Fitzgerald (Oamaru), Mesdames T. K. S. Sidey. Guy Tapley, Ft. S. G'lendining, N. Brett (Auckland), L. G. de la Ferrelle, C.
