ST. BATHANS
Sir,—” Spellbound ” admits that at eventide the environment of the “ Blue Lake ” is a little frightening, after telling the world he was spellbound at the amazing beauty of the scene. To my idea, it is a desperate hole, and If the mining company has not yet been wound up. that the gentleman in charge of the St. Bathans Riding (who, I understand, is also chairman of the Maniototo County Council) should take action, and at least make some effort to eliminate some of the danger for posterity. I would suggest that all the dangerous, precipitous sides on the township side be dynamited. This would have a tendency to shelve things down, and give a chance of rescue if anyone fell in. As it is, the lake is a desperate death trap. This hole is at least 100 feet down, and that depth would only be from where the old elevator ceased operating. I say again for future generations, something should be done at least to blow down those dangerous sides of the “ Blue Lake,” so that the warning notices could be eliminated. —I am, etc., Aqua. Karitane.
