Two Dominion Records Broken

BRILLIANT PERFORMANCES AT ATHLETICS MEETING

Brilliant performances, which included the breaking of two New Zealand records, were seen in one of the most successful athletics meetings held in Dunedin, when five of the touring Australian athletes, Miss S. Strickland, E. ; Carr, J. Marks, P. Mullins and E. Strickland, met Otago and Southland competitors at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday. * A high standard was reached by the New Zealand athletes. Of the 11 events in which the Australians competed, local athletes won six, the visitors four, and one was shared. Miss Shirley Strickland broke the New Zealand 75 Yards record when she covered the distance in 8 3-ssec, and Miss Yvette Williams, of Dunedin, took her own national Shot Putt record to 36ft 3in, bettering her previous distance by nearly two feet.

The outstanding events of the day were the close tussles between Shirley Strickland and Shirley Hardman in the 75 Yards and the 100 Yards races. In the shorter distance the Australian champion beat the gun by the smallest fraction and gained a yard on Miss Hardman from the start. The Dunedin girl strived desperately to bridg.gap, but was still behind with 65 yards covered. With 10 yards to go, Shirley Hardman made a last desperate effort to draw up, but the Australian girl’s small start proved too great, and she won by a little less than a foot in New Zealand record time. Miss Hardman was so close behind that her time would also have been a new record. In the 100 Yards everjt. the start was perfect, both women moving off together, but Shirley Hardman soon gained a slight advantage, which she maintained throughout the first 90 yards. In a desperate effort to head off the New Zealander, Miss Strickland threw herself at the tape, and the event resulted in a dead-heat. The two winners were cheered to the echo for their outstanding display. The race was run in 11 2-ssec.

Cliff Simpson, of Milton, again defeated the Australian, J. Marks, in the Half-mile, in which he gained the decision by the barest' margin. Both competitors started from scratch, and Marks took the lead from Simpson, sitting behind the limit competitors. Simpson remained behind the Australian throughout the first quartermile, keeping a position about three yards to the rear. Going down the back straight for the last time. Marks began to sprint, and his effort carried him past all the limit men. Simpson followed his more experienced opponent into the straight and then began to make up the three yards. With only 10 yards to go he was still behind Marks, and in a desperate finish he managed to throw himself at the tape to win. . Both competitors were very tired over the last few yards. The time for the quarter-mile was 58sec and the full distance took lmin 55 4-ssec—-an excellent time for the Caledonian Ground. . , , Although the Half-mile had taken much out of him, Marks started in the Mile, which is his best distance, and was defeated in a gallant attempt to give L. Clutterbuck, of Gore, 60 yards start. The Gore athlete ran well and had a big advantage on Marks when he began to sprint 220 yards from the tape. Marks followed suit and was catching the leader at every stride, but Clutterbuck held on to win by several yards. Because he has had several hard races over 440 yards within a short time recently, Edwin Carr did not start in the Quarter-mile, but elected to run in the 220 and 100 Yards Races. The spectators were treated to a wonderful display of relaxed running when the young. Australian champion ran in the 220 Yards, which he won easily. He began quickly and gained an early lead of 2 yards on his teammate. E. Strickland. Throughout the race, Carr ran effortlessly, and went on to win well. He later took second place in the 100 Yards event, won by A. R. P. Eustace. Again he displayed effortless style in running a distance to which he had not been trained. Eustace won in even time under conditions that did not favour records. Miss Shirley Strickland, who was competing with the disadvantage of a sore wrist, was third in the 80 Metres Hurdles. She did not seem to run as confidently as in her sprint efforts. Miss Williams, who won the Hurdles, started off 6yds and won soundly. Peter Mullins, who was sixth in the Olympic Decathlon Championship, competed in the Javelin Throw, the 120 Yards Hurdles, Putting the Shot and the Australian relay team, displaying his versatility by running 100 yards in the latter event. His time for the Hurdles was only 2-ssec outside the national record, and under the conditions was a fine performance. He was slow to start, and took the lead over the last three hurdles to win by 2 yards.
