UNEMPLOYMENT IN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES Rec. 9 p.m. - GENEVA, Feb. 26. The International Labour Office reported a significant end-of-the-year rise in unemployment in six European countries. Italy had 2,161,'271 registered unemployed—an increase of nearly 400,000 over December, 1947. Other countries in which the increase in unemployment was most noticeable were Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France and. Switzerland. Unemployment in the United States remained below 4 per cent, during the last nine months of 1948, but increased to 4.4 per cent., or 2.664,000, in January, 1949, compared with 2,965,000 in January, 1948. In Britain, 359,000 were registered at unemployment exchanges as wholly or partially unemployed in December, 1948. compared with 307,200 the year before.
