A MAJOR TASK

V LEVELLING CARISBROOK

WORK NOW UNDER WAY Canterbury has claimed the Plunket Shield. No more major cricket fixtures will he played in Dunedin this season. .Thoughts are therefore turning towards football, the Ranfurly Shield and the centre of Otago Rugby football, Carisbrook. While enthusiasts may be wondering whether a depleted Otago side will be able to retain the coveted trophy this year the Carisbrook groundsman, Mr A. Ross, is busily engaged in the first part of the major project which will eventually result in the raising of the level of the ground. Yesterday, when the Daily Times called at Carisbrook, Mr Ross and his assistants were working on a large bare area north of the representative cricket wicket. A turf-cutting machine had been in use and the filling-up process had begun. Sand is being carted and dumped in the unturfed area. A rotary hoe will be used to mix the sand with the soil and the turf will then be re-laid. Rolling will complete the process. . . ' Excellent progress was being made by Mr Ross and his team and, given favourable weather, the task should be completed in time to allow the ground to consolidate properly before the football season opens. The area being levelled this year is the hollow in front of the terrace. Next year the depression in front of the main stand will be filled and in the third year the area around the wicket on the Glen and terrace side will be treated. The final project will be the levelling of the large area at the workshops end. Largely because of the wish of the Otago Rugby Union to cause as little disruption to cricket as possible the work is being done in these comparatively small sections. The ground itself is not the only partof Carisbrook which is receiving attention. Painters were busy on the Rose Stand yesterday and the caretaker’s house and the pressbox will also be spruced up before the winter. The total cost of all the work to be undertaken is estimated to be approximately £3OOO. v : ' •
