CONTRACT LET FOR NEW BUILDING A contract for the furnishing and erection of the steel of the 40-storey secretariat building of the United Nations, to be erected at the East River, in New York City, between Forty-second and Forty-eighth streets, was recently awarded to the American Bridge Company, a United States Steel Corporation subsidiary. • This will be the first structure in the permanent home of the United Nations to be built on the New York City site. About 13,000 tons of steel will be required for the towering ! secretariat structure, which will be 72 feet wide and 287 feet long. The building will comprise 39 floors and a penthouse. There will be two framed base- j ments below street level.
