TAX REDUCTIONS

EXPECTED IN AUSTRALIA

N ZP A—Copyright

Rec. 8 p.m. CANBERRA. Jan. 17. Federal Ministers believe that the Prime Minister will soon announce taxation reductions of £30,000,000 a year, beginning next financial year. Mr Chifley, who will return to-mor-row from a Tasmanian holiday, maymake a preliminary report to Cabinet on January 27. In the six months ended December 31, the Government collected £ 187.395,000 from all kinds of taxation. This was over £8,000,000 more than the Government collected in the last six months of 1947, when direct and indirect taxes were 3 per cent to 33.3 per cent, higher. It is expected that the total collections for this financial year, ending June 30. will be nearly £520.000.000 more than the Budget estimate.
