COMMITTEE APPROVAL

MR ACHESON’S NOMINATION

APPOINTMENT AS SECRETARY OF STATE

NZPA—Copyright

Rec. 9 p.m. WASHINGTON. Jan. 14. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee to-day unanimously approved the nomination of Mr Dean Acheson as Secretary of State after hearing him assert that aggressive Communism was fatal to free Governments and peoples. The committee’s decision indicated the quick and overwhelming approval of Mr Acheson’s appointment by the Senate on Tuesday. After hearing Mr Acheson behind closed doors for more than two hours, the committee took the unusual step of releasing part of his testimony, a single paragraph which summed up his attitude to Communism. The paragraph said: “ It is my view that Communism as a doctrine is economically fatal to free society and to human rights and fundamental freedoms. Communism as an aggressive factor in world conquest is fatal to independent Governments and free peoples”
