RESPECTED FIGURE
DEATH OF CONSTABLE W. J. HARVEY Mr William James Hervey. who diea suddenly at his home at Macandrew Bay on Thursday, at the age of 67, had been a member of the Pohce Force for 40 years when he retired on May 1, 1945. Mr Harvey was stationed for a time at Balclutha, but for most of his career he was attached to the Central Station, at Dunedin. He was orderly at the City Police Court for many years, and in this capacity earned the goodwill of Bench and Bar and court officials, as well as all others who came in contact with him. He carried out his onerous duties with oustanding tact, courtesy and ability, and became a highly respected figure years before his retirement. His knowledge of the law and Police Court procedure were often of great assistance, particularly to justices of the peace, who are necessarily not so well versed in matters of court procedure as stipendiary magistrates. He leaves a wife and a daughter, Mrs J. S. Fleming, of Dunedin. The funeral on Saturday at the Southern Cemetery, was very largely attended.
