BIG OIL STRIKE IN THE MIDDLE EAST

LONDON, Jan. 13. An oil strike, claimed as likely to be the biggest in the Middle East, has been made about 10 miles south of a well discovered at Sudr, in the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt, in 1947, reports the Cairo correspondent of the Daily Telegraph. The American Socony Vacuum Oil Company, in conjunction with AngloEgyptian Oilfields, has drilled two wells capable of producing 40,000 barrels a day. This is only an estimate, but a Socony official is confident that such a figure could be reached. It is considered that production, together with that of the existing wells, could equal the yield of the Abadan and Saudi-Arabian oilfields. A spokesman of the Anglo-Egyptian Oilfields. Limited, said he was very sceptical about the reports from Cairo on the new oil discoveries. One company believed that the new well, coupled with two previous wells in the same field, indicated the possibility of substantial deposits, but. it was considered that there was no justification for the view that they constituted the biggest oil discovery in the Middle East.
