AFTER EIGHT DAYS
LADDERS HELD UNSAFE WATERSIDERS’ COMPLAINT PA AUCKLAND, Jan. 14. As a result of a complaint by waterside workers that the ladders into the holds were dangerous, work w r as stopped in the Danish motor ship Astoria, which was discharging Nauru "Island phosphate at central wharf this morning. The men went down into the holds shortly after 8 o’clock in " the morning, but came up at 8.30 for meeting. They said the way in which the lad’■ders were recessed back from the coamings was unsafe. After the ship had been inspected by a Marine Department surveyor, it ' was decided to make structural altera‘.‘tions to the ladders. The waterside Avorkers left the ship and were transferred to other jobs after they had . replaced the hatch covers. ; About 2 o’clock in the afternoon engineers started work on the ladders, and the job is expected to be finished to-morrow. The Astoria had been discharging 'phosphate for about eight days, and she had only another day’s work to do, and was due to sail to-night for Nauru Island.
