UNIVERSITY SWIMMING CARNIVAL NEW ZEALAND TEAM BEATEN NZPA—Copyright MELBOURNE, Jan. 14. The combined Australian Universities defeated the combined New Zealand Universities’ team by 35 points to 12 at a swimming carnival last night. The New Zealanders won only two events—the 220 Yards Breaststroke and the Three Metre Dive, but with a little more luck could have won three others. In the 440 Yards Freestyle, Peter Blomfield led all the way until overtaken in the last five or six yards to be beaten by a touch. L. Barry was defeated by a foot in the 220 Yards Freestyle, and although he was placed third in the 110 Yards Freestyle, he was not more than a foot behind the winner. V. R Ley. of Sydney, won the 110 Yards Backstroke in I.2s—an Australian Universities redord, and an unofficial Victorian record for the distance. Des Begg (New Zealand), the One Metre and Three Metre national diving champion, took honours in the Three Metre Dive. Results:— 440 Yards Freestyle.—W. Orchard (Australia), 1; P. No definite advice of the delivery date of the first of its order of 55 trolley buses has been received by the Auckland Transport Board. The general manager of the board. Mr C. R. Gribble, said tlrit the manufacturers in England had ad-, vised that four complete buses would be shipped in December, six in January, and five in February, but it was not yet known if any had been sent.
