CANTERBURY HANDICAP HIGHLAND FLING THIRD PA CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 2. The Canterbury Park Trotting Club held the first day of its summer meeting at Addington on Saturday in fine but overcast weather before a good attendance. The track was holding for the early races, but improved for the later events. Bonny Scott finished first in the Islington Handicap, but on a protest by the chief stipendiary steward she was disqualified for the race for allegedly causing interference in the straight. The horses affected were Golden Shadow, Dragoman, and Good Review, and they were placed in the order named. The totalisator handled £107,067 10s, compared with £114,202 last year. Highland Fling had gone off well, but was a long way back. There was no change in the order of the leaders at the end of seven furlongs, while 10 lengths back Aberhall headed the others, Highland Fling being handy to the bunch though last yet. Monagh Leigh dashed into the lead half a mile from home where Highland Fling started to move up. Monagh Leagh had a lead of four lengths from Plunder Bar at the home turn with Checkmate six lengths back. Gold Peg had dropped out, while Highland Fling was making up ground with Dundee Sandy also finishing well. The finish was without interest, Monagh Leagh being well clear of Plunder Bar, while seven lengths back Highland Fling beat Dundee Sandy by half a length, with Checkmate next' after a gap. Highland Fling ran the last mile and a-half in 3min 9 l-ssec, a very fine effort on a track that was not fast. STEWARDS’ HANDICAP, Of £825. Class 4.43. Two miles. 6/4 —Jimmy Scott, 72yds bhd (W. R.
