DEATH IN BRITAIN
MISS ROSINA BUCKMAN NEW ZEALAND-BORN SOPRANO Rec. 10 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 1. Miss Rosina Buckman, opera prima donna and one of the greatest Isoldes of her time, died in the Battersea General Hospital on December 30.
Born in Blenheim (New Zealand), Miss Buckman studied singing at the Birmingham School of Music and then went into light opera and musical comedy in Australia. Engaged there for Dame Melba’s opera season, she also toured with John McCormack, but returned later to England. Making her debut in Covent Garden in 1914 in La Boheme, Miss Buckman made a great success a year later as Madame Butterfly in Robert Courtneidge’s opera season. She was the leading soprano in Sir Thomas Beecham’s Opera Company from 1915 to 1920 and a singing principal in dramatic roles including Isolde. Creating the soprano role in English in Isidore de Lava’s “ Nail ” and Dame Ethel Smyth’s “ The Boatswain’s Mate,” Miss Buckman was also the principal soprano for the 1919-20 Covent Garden grand season. She went on a world tour in 1922-23. Miss Buckman was an honorary R.AM. and a professor of singing of the Roval Academy of Music.
