DARING THIEVES
SHOP ENTERED LOSS OF STOCK VALUED AT £250 PA TIMARU, Dec. 29. Articles of clothing and other goods valued at £250 were stolen from the shop premises of Beath and Co., Ltd., drapers and • furnishers, in George street Timaru, some time between 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve and 8.40 a.m,, to-day when the shop was reopened after the Christmas holidays. The police believe this to be a planned breaking and entering, and it is regarded as one of the most serious thefts during the Christmas season for a large number of years. Although the firm estimates its loss at £250, the exact extent cannot be estimated until after a stock-taking. The evidence suggests that some person or persons climbed on to the roof of Beath’s building and forced a way into a photographic studio. They appropriated several heavy curtains, made them into a “ rope,” and then climbed to a skylight which was slid open, the “ rope ” was made fast, and the intruders apparently slid down into the shop. The joined curtains were found hanging from the skylight when a member of Beath’s staff opened up the shop for business to-day. The articles stolen included suits, suit lengths, shirts, collars, ties, underclothing, suitcases, handkerchiefs, pyjamas, gift sets, socks, pullovers, slippers, blankets, and women’s hose-
