CAPTAIN SANDY IS BUILDING FINE RECORD

As in the Auckland galloping Cup, run at EUerslie on Monday, the Auckland Trotting Cup was a triumph for South Island horses, the first four horses coming from the “ mainland." The Oamaruowned and trained Captain Sandy confirmed his good form of earlier in the season by winning comfortably. Captain Sandy did not start racing until he was a four-year-old, and in that season he recorded a win and five minor placings. His win was in a division of a trial race in which Hall Ace and Spring Parade filled the minor placings. At the Otago Hunt meeting last season he defeated Melvian and Trustee, going on to run a dead heat with Ace of Diamonds at Forbury Park. At the Canterbury Park meeting in May he defeated Worthy Dick and County Antrim. After running sixth to Minoru in the Islington Handicap at Addington at his first start this season, Captain Sandy was taken to Auckland, where he ran second to Goldina. On the second day of the September meeting he was a dual winner, beating Indemnity and Certify at his first start and Trustee and Sure Rey later in the day. On the first day of the New Zealand Cup meeting he was beaten a neck by Indigo over two miles. On the third and final days of the meeting he was returned a winner, making him eligible for the Auckland Cup. Only a six-year-old, Captain Sandy is owned by Mr J. M. Bain, and he has been driven throughout this season by J. Bryce.
