BALKIS SHOULD GET ON WINNING LIST SOON

Balkis raced consistently at the Wingatui meeting for a second and a third. On the first day she was third to Magical and Theocritus in the Publican’s Handicap. and on Tuesday she was only a head behind Sal's Pal in the Flying Handicap. In this race she was unlucky, as she lost much more ground at the start than the margin she was beaten by. Balkis is in fine condition, and should be worth following during the New Year meetings. The Sir Beau filly has now been placed in six of her nine starts this season. Jottings Acceptances for the first day of the Southland meeting are due to-day. Infatuate will not be in novice company very much longer. Excellency is the first galloper to win the Hazlett Gold Cup two years in succession. Nominations for the Wellington meeting are due on Thursday of next week. Handicaps* for the first day of the Vincent Jockey Club’s meeting will be published on January 6, and acceptances are due on January 10. Unlucky Jan will not be off the winning list much longer. She was one of the unlucky runners at Wingatui. Finished Strongly Night Rider came home strongly from a long way back to get third in the Abbotsford Handicap, and the Nightly gelding should pay expenses at one of the New Year meetings. Should Be Improved All Alone went down well in her preliminary for the Novice Handicap, in which she carried 81b over-weight, but she was never prominent. The Salmagundi filly is engaged on the southern circuit, and the race she had at Wingatui should have improved her. Early Return Likely Baygundi lost any chance he had in the Abbotsford Handicap by running wide when he appeared to be going well. He was backed down to 2/3 on the respective machines, and may soon make a return to his supporters. Brother to Erlskay Prawns was always travelling like a winner when the field settled down in the Abbotsford Handicap, and the three-year-old brother of Eriskay won in a manner suggesting further success in the near future. Balllnagh Retired Ballinagh’s career on the turf has ended. A recent examination revealed that he had severely damaged two sesamoid bones. His owner, Mr H. N. Glazebrook, is hopeful that the horse will recover sufficiently to be used for breeding purposes. Balllnagh Is a five-year-old horse from Balloch from Anteroom, by Fairway. Both his sire and dam were imported from England. Ballinagh was a promising handicap horse and during his career earned £2925 in stakes. Speedy Sort Attractive Air showed a fine burst of speed in the Novice Handicap at Wingatui on Tuesday, and shows promise of developing into a very useful performer.

She was stopping In the last half furlong, but the big break she put on the field about three furlongs from home allowed her a have a margin of two lengths at the post. She is a three-year-old filly by Airway from Attractive Note, a Paper Money mare from Attractive Lady, the dam of those good performers, Lord Nuffield, The 'Joker and Lady Nuffield. Tendency to Run Out Although Super’s winning margin in the Stewards’ Handicap at Wingatui was a narrow one he added to his handicap by running out at the turn for home. Once L. Hare got him straightened up, however, he mowed down those in front of him at every stride. The Nearco horse is capable of winning again. Trained at Oamaru Royal Sal put up a pleasing performance in running Defendant to a nose in the Jockey Club Handicap, and in another stride or so she would have been in front It was the best race that the Salmagundi mare has run, and provided she holds her form, she should pick up one of the principal handicaps on the Waikouaiti-Oamaru-Kurow circuit. She was got fom Lady Greyspear, by Greyspear from St. Winnow, by Masterpiece from St. Helen, by Signor from Helen Portland, by Dorchester. Royal Sal is trained at Oamaru by G. Paterson.
