“CLOSED SHOP” TO OPERATE IN ALL BRITISH COAL MINES
Rec 9.30 p.m, LONDON, Dec. 23. The “ closed shop ” is to operate in British coal mines from February 1, when it will be a condition of employment in the industry that all workers shall be members of the National Union of Mine Workers or affiliated organisations. This decision has been reached after protracted negotiations between representatives of the union and the National Coal Board, c avs the industrial correspondent of the Daily Telegraph. Union membership has been compulsory in some areas, including South Wales, Northumberland and parts of the Midlands, for a number of years, but has never previously been applied nationally.
