NO AFFORESTATION SCHEME FOR NASEBY
Special Correspondent WELLINGTON, Dec. 23. In spite of strong representations made from Central • Otago, the Stale Forest Service does not intend to proceed with any scheme of afforestation in the Naseby area. An officer of the State Forest Service told the Daily Times to-day that the question of afforestation in the Naseby district had been considered in the past by the service, but was not viewed favourably. The climate was regarded as too rigorous, the rainfall was too low, and frosts were too severe. The Central Otago district had always been a treeless one. It was true that some trees grew there in. favourable spots, but it was not the place for the establishment of forests expected to yield payable crops of timber. , .
