GENTLE REMINDER
Discussing the responsibility of repairing fences burned down by fires started by locomotives, the general manager of railways, Mr F. W. Aickin, at a conference in New Plymouth, recalled an appropriate episode that occurred some years ago. A mill had been burned down through a similar cause in Auckland, and the department’s chief locomotive designer had travelled north to see if the design of the engine were at fault. During the night he had awakened, and, feeling hungry, had fumbled about on a table beside his bed. His hand hit somethin" and, looking at it, he found it was a Bible. The first words at the top of the open page were: “ He who burns his neighbour's crop shall surely pay compensation.”
