WATERSIDE SECRETARY AND THE NEWSPAPERS
Although speaking in an informal vein, the secretary of the Dunedin branch of the Waterside Workers’ Union, Mr S. B. Macdonald, had some comments to make on “misrepresentation by the press ” at a social gathering held yesterday afternoon when the Otago Harbour Board entertained members of organisations connected with the working of the port. Speaking before Mr Macdonald, Mr F. E. Tyson, the deputy chairman of the board, made passing mention _of aside remarks made by speakers which were not meant for the press. He made joking reference to possible “ misrepresentation.” When Mr Macdonald rose to speak, he said that, like Mr Tyson, he wondered what the press would have to say. Mr Macdonald said that in the past he had been misrepresented by it. At a later stage of the meeting, Mr Macdonald paid a tribute to the helpful attitude of the harbourmaster, Captain F. G. Macdonald. Turning to the reporters, he said: “Now I want you to take a note of that. I know that you won't misrepresent me. You have often misrepresented me in the past” (Laughter.)
