“BUREAUCRATIC CONTROL”
WEIGHT LIMITATION ON • BRIDGES
NELSON-BLENHEIM AREA PA NELSON, Dec. 23. "The action of the Main Highways Board in placing weight restrictions on practically all the main bridges on the Nelson-Blenheim road and the only arterial bridge between Nelson and the West Coast at Motupiko will have the effect of restricting all heavy traffic between Nelson and Blenheim, and Nelson and the West Coast. This is another typical example of bureaucratic control being exercised by the heads of departments in New Zealand.” That statement was made today by Mr P. S. Boyes, managing director of Transport (Nelson), Ltd. He continued that the Main Highways Board had apparently not been able to proceed very far in its argument over axle loadings, and therefore had adopted the step, under the regulation gazetted in 1940 as a war emergency regulation, of restricting loads on bridges. “It is very peculiar,” he said, “ that all the bridges listed should suddenly require these restrictions, particularly at a time when the produce of this district is reaching its peak and is required to be moved without any delay. In my opinion the whole position with regard to axle loadings and bridges is a sorry reflection _on the competence of the Main Highways Board.
