FIRST STRIKE THREAT
BRITISH NATIONALISED RAILWAYS WORKERS DEMAND WAGE RISE NZPA—Copyright Rec. 10 p.m. LONDON. Dec. 23. A national strike of all British railway workers is threatened early in the" New Year unless the Government can bring about a settlement of the wages dispute between the National Union of Railwaymen and the Railway Excutive. A special delegate conference of railwaymen last night decided to give the Labour Minister, Mr G. A. Isaacs. 21 days’ notice of a “state of dispute” within the industry following the Railway Executive’s rejection of the union’s claim for an all-round increase of 12s 6d weekly. The general secretary of the union, Mr J. B. Figgins, said: " This means that unless the Minister intervenes within 21 days we are free to strike.” It is generally expected that Mr Isaacs will either refer the dispute to arbitration- or appoint a special court of inquiry to report on the facts. If he does nothing he faces the first official strike against a nationalised industry.
