MEAT DELIVERIES
ARGENTINA'S DIFFICULTIES FOREIGN CURRENCY PROBLEM NZP A Special Correspondent Rec. 9 p.m. LONDON. Dec. 16. . Buenos Aires reports published in London suggest that the Argentine’s failure to fulfil meat deliveries to Britain are due partly to the effects of a drought which have, decreased killings, and partly to the fact that the Argentine has been selling meat to countries which are prepared to pay higher prices than Britain. Among them are the United States, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, Spain, Italy and Venezuela.
According to an official statement in Buenos Aires, the Argentine was forced to accept offers from these countries in order to obtain foreign currency. This she could not do under her agreement with Britain, because of the non-convertibility of sterling. These reports confirm the belief in London that the chairman of the National Economic Council, Senor Miguel Miranda, when he arrives here, will demand that any future British payments for Argentine meat should be partly in Marshall aid dollars. Some Argentine reports published here suggest that Senor Miranda will leave for London on January 10, but others deny that any date has yet been fixed, or indeed, that there is any certainty about Senor Miranda, coming to London at all.
