Meeting of Executive

Mr I. T. Catto was in the chair at the monthly meeting of the Oamaru R.S.A. Executive on Wednesday night’ There were also present Messrs J. M. Macaulay, C. Zimmermann, E. M. Freeman, A. C. Watson, J. McLeod, B. Allan, E. Cameron, J. Stenhouse, J. Clark, J. T. Burrows and the secretary, Mr A. C. Piper. Correspondence was received from the Oamaru Borough Council in reference to the leasing of the area at the ItchenSevern streets corner, and the terms of the lease.

The North Otago War Memorial Committee wrote concerning the proposal for a garden of memories and entrance gates on the west side of the bowling green as a war memorial.—The president commented that the negotiations with the council had been highly satisfactory, and the executive decided to support the War Memorial Committee’s conception of a war memorial for North Otago. The British Legion, Bambridge, forwarded a list of 100 more names under the Food for Britain scheme. —Received.

Gillies of a photograph of the 2nd NZ Contingent at Rhenoster Kop, South Africa, and volumes of the history of the South African and other wars, was approved: also a letter of congratulation to the Oamaru Garrison Band on its success at the Alexandra contest.

Tile secretary reported that Imperial pensions had been reduced to New Zealand recipients because of the rate of exchange being stabilised. There were 42 such pensioners in this district, and their accustomed mode of living had been reduced. He quoted the case of a New Zealander who had served in the Imperial Forces, and said representations had been made to the Sheep-owners’ Debt to British Seaman Fund on the matter.—His action was approved. It was decided to write to the Housing Department and State Advances Corporation expressing concern at the delay of completing State houses in Oamaru. These, it was stated, were held up for lack of tiles, of which certain firms held ample supplies.

Four inward transfers and one outward were approved.
