SIGNS OF EBB IN BRITAIN’S GREAT GAMBLING WAVE
NZP A Special Correspondent Rec. 9 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 15. An indication that Britain’s great gambling wave may be on the ebb is the announcement that the Hull Boulevard greyhound racing track will close because of financial losses. It is the first track to shut down since the levy on bookmakers and the new totalisator tax .were imposed. For some time there has been a falling off in receipts at the dog tracks. Totalisator takings last year were £67,000,000 less than in 1946 and are still going down. Football pools also tear a decline. The promoters had hoped to reach an annual turnover of £100,000,000, compared with £35,000,000 before the war. It is possible that they will fail in that ambition. The main influence on the decline in betting is that money is becoming tighter.
