REFERENDUM DATE IS NOT YET FIXED

PA WELLINGTON, Dec. 15. Inquiries made in Wellington to-day showed that no date has yet been fixed for the holding of the gaming and licensing referendum and that the dates mentioned in the advice to returning officers were purely to give them a guide to the approximate time votes are likely to be taken so that preliminary arrangements for the polls can be made.

The Otago Hospital Board has received permission from the .Minister of Health to proceed with the work of remodelling El Nido, to bring the building up to the standard of requirements for a ' modern maternity' hospital. Work is to be commenced almost im- !

mediately. When completed, the home will furnish another nine much-needed maternity beds in the city area. The cost of the alteration is estimated at £2486. Considerable remodelling work will be carried out on the ground floor, and a new nursery will be built. On the first floor, a sink and sterilising room will be added, and also a first stage room. Additional staff quarters are also being prepared. When completed, El Nido will be fully equipped as a modern maternity hospital. The alteration work will be carried out by the Fletcher Construction .Company, Ltd., to plans drawn by Mason and Wales, architects.
