CHRISTMAS SHOPPING LESS ACTIVITY THIS YEAR There are only seven more shopping days before Christmas. This fact, notwithstanding, many proprietors of city and suburban shops are surveying somewhat gloomily their daily takings in what is regarded as the busiest shopping period of the year. There is certainly more than the tisual activity in George and Princes streets these days, but the executives of firms are finding that the volume of business being done does not compare with that of the past two; or three years. Two or three weeks ago they had the comforting thought that, human nature being what it is, there was likely to be a last-minute orgy of spending which would result in more satisfactory takings. There will, undoubtedly, be a last-minute rush, probably starting to-morrow, but the opinion now appears to be general that
