EGG RATIONING AGAIN IMPOSED IN DUNEDIN AREA

Eggs are again being rationed in Dunedin, although the system of rationing that is to be adopted now that butter registration has ceased has not yet been decided. At the moment the ration amounts to one egg a person a week, and retailers will have to adopt their own methods of rationing. Eggs were plentiful last month and many householders ,and poultry keepers preserved large quantities. In the past week the supply to the local market has fallen away, partly because Wellington is being supplied with Otago eggs. There may be a slight improvement before the Christmas demand, but those who have not preserved eggs for winter use will be unlikely to obtain sufficient for this purpose at this stage of the season. Difficulty is being experienced in finding a way to ration eggs to consumers now that it is no longer necessary to register with grocers for the purchase of butter. Hitherto eggs’ were rationed at so many to each coupon book, but this basis no longer exists. Consequently, it is difficult for the authorities to determine how many eggs each retailer should receive. A system is. however, being discussed at present.
