LARGE CAPACITY

SAWYERS’ BAY RESERVOIR FURTHER PLANS ANNOUNCED Amplifying statements made at the special meeting of the Port Chalmers Borough Council on Wednesday night, the town clerk, Mr C. Blackman, told the Daily Times yesterday that the new reservoir at Sawyers’ Bay would be capable of holding 20,000,000 ga\ lo ”s of water. The new reservoir will be coupled to the existing dam and a new nine-inch trunk main will be laid from the dams to Mussel Bay, at the junction of George street and Wiciciiffe terrace, Mr Blackman said. The present seven-inch trunk main, which is already cement lined for the greater part of its length, will continue to be utilised and the two feeder mains should provide an adequate supply to all parts of the borough for many years to come. ...... Provision is made for the installation of a booster pump in the trunk main which will automatically _ function should the water pressure fall below normal at any time. An important feature of the proposals, Mr Blackman said, is the complete reticulation of Carey’s Bay and Sawyers’ Bay, as well as renewals and alterations necessary in the area at present reticulated. In the case of Carey’s Bay, a special feeder main would be laid through the Town Belt, via the railway tunnel. When the council receives authority to proceed with the water scheme it is proposed that the first work to be carried out will be the reticulation of those areas in the borough which, are not yet connected. Concurrently, of course, Mr Blackman added, with this work the construction of the new reservoir at Sawyers’ Bay will be undertaken. The council’s consulting engineers have been instructed, to prepare all the necessary working plans for giving effect to the proposals, he said. Provision is to be made for supplying water to Roseneath in the event of that area being ultimately amalgamated with the borough.
