PORT OF OTAGO CARGOES AND SHIPS FIGURES FOR PAST YEAR “ One of the most satisfactory reports in the history of the Otago Harbour Board,” was how Mr E. S. Thompson described the information supplied to the meeting of the board by the secretary, Mr J. Renton, last evening, when a number of new records for the port were revealed. A total of 546,793 tons of cargo handled in the past year was one of the new records. Records established during the past year were:— November 17, 1947: Marabank arrived at Port Chalmers to discharge 9951 tons of phosphate—the largest cargo ever handled at the Port of Otago. November, 1947: Record monthly cargo tonnage. Highest monthly total of coastal and intercolonial imports, 33,542 tons; highest monthly total of all imports, 48,494 tons; highest monthly total of imports and exports, >7,523 tons. March 5, 1948: H.M.A.S. Australia arrived at Port Chalmers, equalling the record for the longest vessel to berth at the port (630 feet). April, 1948: Highest monthly total of imports and exports, 59 361 tons. September, 1948: Highest yearly total of coastal and intercolonial imports, 212,260 tons; highest yearly total overseas imports, 167.837 tons; highest yearly total for all imports, 380,097 tons; highest yearly total for overseas exports, 85,890 tons; highest yearly total of cargo handled at the port, 546,793 tons.
