GREATER DEPTH
OTAGO HARBOUR RESULT OF DREDGING FAVOURABLE COMMENT As a result of the Otago Harbour Board’s dredging programme, ships negotiating the Victoria channel can now draw a maximum depth of 24 feet 6 inches at high water instead of the previous maximum of 23 feet 6 inches. The hertths at the Victoria and Birch street wharves have been dredged to a depth of 27 feet, as also nas the berth at the Rattray street wharf from Q shed to S shed, so that ships drawing up to 24 feet 6 inches have ample water under them at these berths. This information was contained in letters sent recently by the board to the Marine Department and to the various overseas shipping companies. Replies were received at a meeting of the board last night from the shipping companies, favourable comment being made on the board’s achievement. It was stated that the marine superintendents of various lines would visit Dunedin on October 27 to discuss draughts with the board. Commenting on the increased depth, the secretary of marine, Mr W. C. Smith, in his reply, said that it was particularly gratifying and conveyed congratulations to those responsible for the improvement.
