BAIL GRANTED

ILLICIT STILL CASE Bail was fixed at £2OO, with one surety of £2OO. when Robert Oliver McLean, aged 36, a fitter and turner, was further remanded; in the City Police Court yesterday. McLean had pleaded guilty on the previous day to having on his premises at 1 Stanley street, Ravensbourne, on October 19 a still for distilling spirit, without having first obtained a licence. He was remanded in custody to appear on Tuesday. Asking for bail on behalf of the accused, Mr F. M. Hanan said that the police and the Customs Department had been given the fullest opportunity to make investigations, and had been to the accused’s house at Ravensbourne and to his crib at Waitati. The Magistrate. Mr J. D. Willis: The reason why he was not granted bail when he first appeared was that he is liable to six months’ imprisonment hard labour. The Collector of Customs, Mr F. G. Haigh, said that the still and other material was at the police station and he would not oppose bail.
