BALCLUTHA CLAY BIRD CHAMPIONSHIP The South Otago Double Rise Clay Bird Championship was decided at Balclutha on Saturday, and the winner was W. Elliott (Balclutha), with 15 breaks. The competition, which was for Ten Pair off 14 yards, was open to any gun club member in New Zealand, and with it was awarded a handsome challenge cup, which the winner will hold for a year. It Is the first time such an event has been arranged in South Otago. Other scores were: N. West, W. Throp 12 breaks. J. Marshall, J. Stoddart, J. Stiven 11, C. Wilson, N. Callaghan 10. Conditions for the shoot were difficult because of a cold, southerly wind. Other competitions resulted as follows: The Fifteen Bird Handicap was won by D. Campbell, with a “ possible" off 18 yards. Next best scores were:»N. West, 12yds. 14 breaks: J. Marshall, 12, 13; J. Wilson, 11, 13; B. Craig, 11, 13; J. Stoddart, 15, 13; C. Wilson, 14, 13. Two Ten Target Handicap Matches were held and N. West won the first with a "possible,” while in the second J. Marshall and J. Stiven tied with nine breaks each. CRICKET A cricket match between Clutha and Union (Invercargill), at Balclutha on Saturday resulted in a win for the home side by the narrow margin of five runs. The visitors batted first and had lost five wickets . for 17 runs when G. Shirley and E. Sly became associated in a partnership which yielded 138 runs. G. Shirley made 106 and Sly 41 The Southland representative. C. V. Shirley, was dismissed for a " duck.” Bowling for Clutha, A. McGregor took four wickets for 11 runs; H. Dalgety, three for 15; and W. Barron, three for 26. Top scorers for Clutha were: A. McGregor 31, J. Henderson 29, A. Stewart 26. and A Dunn 23 not out. The best bowling performances for Union were: G. Shirley, two for 17; Sly, two for 20: Stephens, two for 50. R.S.A. REUNION Visitors were present from Milton, Clinton. Clutha Valley, Kaitangata, Owaka and Invercargill, but the Dunedin executive was not represented at the annual reunion of the Clutha R.S.A. Mr James Gold was the toastmaster, and in addition to the toasts, items were contributed by Messrs J. L. Guest, B. Gold, B. Nelson, and C. North, and a five-piece " Diggers’ ” orchestra. GOLF At the closing day of the Balclutha Golf Club on Saturday afternoon, a Mixed Foursomes Stableford Handicap was played . the winners "being T. M. Thompson and Miss S. Thompson, with 11—11— 22. The president, Mr W. L. Jolly, thanked all who had helped to make the season such a successful one. and the president of the Ladies’ Club, Mrs A. J. Henderson, presented the trophies. FOOD FOR BRITAIN The Balclutha Borough Council yesterday received an airmail letter from the British Ministry of Food stating that the six cases of food which were sent by the Scottish Monarch had arrived and would be forwarded, as requested, for distribution in Balcluthas " adopted ” Scottish town, Burntisland.
