SOUTHLAND'S WIN
OTAGO OVERWHELMED OTHER REPRESENTATIVE FIXTURES The Southland women’s basketball team outplayed Otago by 16 goals to 3 at Forbury Park on Saturday. Southland appealed as a competent team which had complete understanding. Otago, on the other hand, displayed little teamwork. The diminutive Southland centre, M. Hillis, was the outstanding member of her team, impressing particularly with her high intercepting jump. The elusive Southland forward, S. Smith, marking the tall Otago captain, R. Williams, fed the ball regularly to the most accurate of the three shoots. N. Townsend. The lightning passes of the Southland players took the ball to the circle area in copy book style, but the Otago centres were too hesitant. What chances came the way of the Otago shoots were nullified by their indifferent aim. At no stage of the game did Southland lose its superiority. The visitors scored a string of goals in the early part of the first spell, and at half time were leading by 7 goals to 2. In the second half Southland continued to net goals. Towards the end of the game Otago showed a vast improvement, but it was then that the absence of sure shooting became pronounced, the game ending with the score: Southland 16, Otago 3. Results of lower grade representative fixtures were:— Second Grade North Otago A 21, Otago 6. Southland 8, Otago 5. Third Grade South Otago 18, Otago A 3. Milton 13, Otago B 8. Otago A 8, West Otago 8. West Otago B 9, Otago B 6. Fourth Grade Otago 13, North Otago B 10. Eastern Districts 19, Otago 9.
