REQUESTED TO ABDICATE
MAHARAJA GAEKWAR OF BARODA ACCUSATIONS IN LEGISLATURE Bee. 8.30 p.m. LONDON. Aug. 12. - Messages from Bombay state that the Maharaja Gaekwar of Baroda. reputedly the second richest ruling prince in India, has been called upon to abdicate by the State Legislature, which has asked the Government of India to appoint a Regency Council. The Maharaja, who is a well-known racing owner, has scratched all five of his entries at the Deauville races, and is now en route back to Baroda from Paris.
Bombay messages state that the Maharaja was accused by speakers in the State Legislature of taking inter-est-free loans from the State Treasury without authority, and with otherwise misusing public funds. There has been considerable agitation against the Gaekwar since he broke Baroda’s antibigamy laws in 1943 by marrying a second wife. The Gaekwar’s secretary said in Paris that the Maharaja had instructed his chief Minister that propaganda against him in the State must stop. The Gaekwar considered that this propaganda was being inspired by the Indian Congress Party.
