CONTROL RELAXED
SPOUTING AND DOWNPIPING USE OF COPPER AND ALUMINIUM P.A. WELLINGTON. Aug. 12. The building control regulations prohibiting the use of copper and aluminium spouting and downpipes have been relaxed by - a notice gazetted tonight. The Minister of Works. Mr Semple, in a statement said the new regulations permitted the 9 use of either copper or aluminium for spouting and downpiping for housing purposes both for repairs and for new work. The use of copper had not been permitted for such purposes since early in the war years but during recent months the supply position had improved considerably and with increasing supplies of aluminium sheets arriving from the United Kingdom, it was possible to allow both materials to be used for housing purposes. Mr Semple said it was the policy of the Government to relax the building regulations as soon as circumstances and conditions permitted and he felt that with the revocation of this particular control, the difficulty which had been experienced in providing suitable spouting for houses would be overcome. The position in regard to galvanised iron, he said, continued to be most difficult, in fact, critical. He regretted it was impossible at present to include galvanised iroh generally for spouting purposes. Its use would continue to be restricted to essential repairs to existing iron spouting, ridging and downpipes of dwellings only.
