Mrs and Miss Begbie have returned from Wellington after attending the Dominion conference of the Women’s Institutes.
The members of the New Zealand Basketball team are guests at the Criterion Hotel.
Mrs E. M. Holmes, of Victoria road, St. Clair, left yesterday to spend a holiday at Geraldine. The members of the Australian basketball team are guests at the Leviathan Hotel.
Mrs Spencer Scoular, of Prestwick street, is spending a holiday at Geraldine.
Mrs H. D. Muir, president of the New Zealand Basketball Association, is a guest at the Criterion Hotel.
Mr and Mrs Jack Greenslade, of Wanaka, who have been guests at the Grand Hotel, returned home yesterday. Mrs W. Ripley was hostess at a morning tea party yesterday at the Savoy for Miss Isobel Lewis, who is to be married this month.
Miss Euan Pagonis has returned to her home in Dunedin for several weeks’ holiday prior to her departure to join an overseas military hospital. Mrs R. M. Smith, liaison officer for the Australian and New Zealand basketball teams, is a guest at the Leviathan Hotel. Mrs D. J. Rooney, Miss A. Henderson and Miss A. Clark, Australian basketball officials, are guests ■ at the Leviathan Hotel.
Mrs John Rhodes and family, who arrived by air yesterday from' Auckland, are the guests of Mrs L. A. Rhodes, of Union street.
Mr and Mrs W. A. Justice entertained over 50 guests at a delightful party in the Crawford Lounge on Wednesday evening.
Mr and Mrs A. Cecil Dick, of Albert street, asked friends to a 5 o’clock party on Monday to meet Mr W. G. Baird, who holds the office of public trustee in Wellington. Mrs Beth Wakefield left on Wednesday for Waimate, where she will be the guest speaker for Rotary, Red Cross and other organisations, on behalf of the Fat for Britain Campaign.
The Lady Ferguson Memorial Playwriting Competition held annually at the Otago Women’s Club, was judged this year by Mrs Richard White. Of eight entries, the placirigs were: “ Cob Cottage,” by Miss Sylvia Thomson, 1; “Peter,” by Mrs W. J. White, 2; and “Wedding Gift,” by Mrs C. C. Benzoni, 3.
The annual meeting of the Otago Karitane Nurses’ Club was held in the Plunket rooms, Albany street, on Monday night. There was a very good attendance and Mrs Cleghorn, president of the Plunket Society, was present. The office-bearers for 1948-9 are: President, Miss D. Norrie; vice-presidents—Mrs Breen, Mrs Park, Miss M. Mahoney: committee—Mrs Mcßryde, Mrs Megget, Misses H. Dawson, B. Joel, M. Thompson and J. Fraser; secretary-treasurer. Miss R. Cunningham. Arrangements were made for the sewing of garments for the Plunket Shop on Daffodil Day. The members were also eager to knit woollen vests for Cromwell House, London.
At the meeting of the Otago branch of the Society of Women Musicians Miss Irene Barth, the president, who was in the chair, introduced the period (192848) by giving the historical background. The programme comprised three fantastic dances, Shostakovich,. Mrs J. Mitchell (piano): Lyric Sonata, Armstrong Gibbs, Mrs N. Challenger (violin), Mrs C.‘Flamank (piano). Group of modern British songs by Miss Mavis Adam (accompanist Miss Meda Paine): Prelude and Toccata (Alec Rowley) and Jamaican Rhumba (Benjamin), Mrs C. Flamank and Miss Jessie Jones (piano duos). Miss Muriel Noble gave a brief account of the chief artists during the period.
