Good Display Over Hurdles by Pedantic
Special to the Daily Times
CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 11.
The weather was fine at Riccarton this morning after a frost. A few jumpers provided the chief interest in the workPedantic and Ostentatious, two of the Grand National Hurdles candidates, set out together for a school, but the latter gave a very poor showing. He ran off at the first flight and also carried his mate off, and he attempted to repeat the performance at the second, though both jumped the obstacle. Ostentatious ran off at the third, after which he followed Pedantic over the fourth. Pedantic went on to jump the first hurdle again. He gave a good display, but the performance of Ostentatious was very disappointing. Dunky shaped rather better than John Gav over two hurdles, though both went well. Dunky may show up amone the hack hurdlers later in the meeting, though he ran off at the first flight last Saturday. High Morale has shown signs of soreness at a result of his contest with the sod wall in the Grand National Steeplechase. He is' not certain to start in the Beaufort Steeples, but P C. Cleaver will ride him if he runs.
Horses with two engagements next Saturday are Foreign Ways and Grand Coulee, Grand National ■'and Spreydon Hurdles; Revolte, Islington and August Handicaps; Rival Chase, Sumner and Woolston Handicaps.
