EIGHTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
FROM THE FILES OF THE ©tago 2>ail£ tries DUNEDIN, AUGUST 11, 1863. “A goldfields warden reports that the estimated population of Gabriel’s Gully is 1800, of whom 1200 are miners. The late wet weather in the district has made a decided improvement in the mining operations, owing to which cause, and to continued arrivals from the Molyneux, new ground lias been taken up in various places, especially along the Tuapeka River, where three water wheels are in course of erection."
"The market this week has been very irregularly supplied with stock, the few lots of fat cattle that have come forward being eagerly bought up by the butchers at an advance on late rates. Fat sheep are much wanted, and are scarce. Stores, both cattle and sheep, are much inquired for, with few offering. The only arrivals this week are the Oregon from Welshpool with stores, and the Prince Alfred from Wanganui with fat cattle. The former lost very few, but the latter lost 13 out of 60 head shipped.”
” The Provincial Government has taken a proper and prudent course in making public provision for a gratuitous vaccination of children. His Honor the Superintendent has issued a notice to parents and guardians, informing them that attendance will be given at the hospital, Dunedin, every Tuesday and Friday between the hours of 1 and \ o'clock for v vaccinating, without charge, all children who . may be brought for the purpose. Although there is no compulsory vaccination law in operation, we can scarcely think that, under existing circumstances, any parents will neglect to avail themselves of a precaution which is the best safeguard against their own bereavement and the spread of a terrible disease amongst the community.”
